Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra Connect, works by increasing the diameter of the blood vessels that supply your penis.1
This makes it easier for blood to flow into your penis whenever you feel sexually aroused, such as before and during sexual activity.
As blood pressure builds inside your erectile tissue, your penis becomes firmer, allowing you to get an erection that can last throughout sexual intercourse.2
The action of sildenafil is solely limited to blood flow, meaning it won’t make you feel aroused if you’re not in the mood for sex. It also doesn’t have any significant impact on your sex drive or cause random erections unrelated to sexual arousal.
However, by making it easier to get and stay hard, the sildenafil in Viagra Connect can have a significant positive impact on your sexual experience and self-confidence in bed.
So, why does Viagra Connect only come in a 50mg dosage? Normal Viagra®, which can only be purchased with a prescription, comes in three dosages — as a 25mg tablet, a 50mg tablet, and as a 100mg tablet.3

How to Use Viagra Connect 50mg
Taking Viagra Connect is easy. If you have erectile dysfunction, take one Viagra Connect tablet 30 to 60 minutes before you plan to have sex. Viagra Connect takes approximately one hour to start working and has a typical duration of action of around four hours.6
This means that if you take your Viagra Connect tablet at around 7 p.m., you should find it easier to get and maintain an erection until 11p.m, respectively.
Viagra Connect is affected by food, and it might take longer to start working if you take it with a heavy meal.7 While it’s okay to eat after taking Viagra Connect, it’s best to avoid high-fat meals to ensure this medication works effectively.

Side Effects of Viagra Connect
For most men with ED, Viagra Connect is a safe and effective medication for producing stronger erections and improving sexual performance.
However, like all medications, Viagra Connect can cause adverse effects. There are also some situations in which it might not be safe for you to use Viagra Connect, such as if you take other medications that could trigger interactions.
One advantage of Viagra Connect 50mg is that it’s slightly less likely to produce adverse effects than the 100mg dosage of Viagra that’s used to treat moderate to severe ED.9
Common side effects of Viagra Connect include:

Facial flushing
Dyspepsia (indigestion)
Vision issues (blurred vision and/or changes in colour vision)
Myalgia (muscle pain)
Nasal congestion
Dizziness

In rare cases, Viagra Connect and generic versions of sildenafil may cause more severe adverse effects. These include:
Chest pain
Sudden loss of vision
Abrupt decrease in hearing
A ringing sound in your ears
Feelings of dizziness or lightheadedness
Itching or burning while urinating
Shortness of breath

PDE5 inhibitors such as the sildenafil used in Viagra Connect 50mg may also increase your risk of priapism — a painful, rigid erection that lasts for several hours.12
It’s important to seek medical advice if you notice severe or bothersome side effects after using Viagra Connect. If you develop a painful, persistent erection, seek medical attention as soon as you can.
Viagra Connect and other medications that contain sildenafil can interact with some substances and other medications.
For example, Viagra Connect, prescription Viagra or generic forms of the little “blue pill” should not be used with nitrates, alpha-blockers or other medication used to treat high blood pressure, as well as substances that act as vasodilators.13
It’s also important not to use Viagra Connect or any dose of sildenafil at the same time as amyl nitrate amyl nitrite or butyl nitrate “poppers”.
These medications and substances can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure that may cause fainting, injury or serious cardiovascular events such as heart attack or stroke.
